About SAIL

SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited) is a Maharatna steel PSU with integrated plants at Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur, Rourkela and Burnpur. It hires engineers as Management Trainees (Technical) through a written test, trains them for one year, and then places them as Assistant Managers at plants and mines.

How SAIL Salary is Structured

During the one-year training, SAIL MTs draw Rs. 50,000 basic in the Rs. 50,000-1,60,000 scale. After training they become Assistant Managers in E1 at Rs. 60,000 basic in the Rs. 60,000-1,80,000 scale. IDA is 55.7 percent of basic from July 2026, and perks are paid under a cafeteria approach. SAIL quotes a CTC of Rs. 16-17 lakh at the minimum of E1, excluding PRP and location allowances.

What Deductions Will You See?

Provident fund at 12 percent of basic plus IDA is about Rs. 9,300 a month in training and Rs. 11,200 after moving to E1. Professional tax is around Rs. 200. Most SAIL postings come with township quarters, which replaces HRA and keeps taxable pay lower. PSU executives contribute 12 percent of basic plus DA to provident fund, not NPS on basic alone.

SAIL vs Other PSUs

Coal India MTRs. 13-16.5 LPARs. 96,544/mo

BEL Probationary EngineerRs. 12.5-14 LPARs. 80,606/mo

Increments and Career Progression

SAIL gives a 3 percent annual increment on basic, and IDA is revised quarterly. The first step up is automatic: after one year of training, MTs move from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 60,000 basic as Assistant Managers. Later promotions depend on performance and vacancies. MTs cannot request a transfer for the first four years.

Is SAIL Salary Good Compared to Private Sector?

At Rs. 16,50,000 CTC, a SAIL Management Trainee (Technical), training year takes home Rs. 96,544/mo per month in a metro city. This does not capture the full picture -- free or subsidized accommodation, employer retirement contributions, medical coverage for family, and job security add significant value on top of the cash salary. See the Rs. 15 LPA in-hand salary breakdown for a private sector comparison at the same CTC level.

Tax regime: New regime saves Rs. 1,04,582/year more than old regime at this CTC level.
