About NHPC

NHPC is India's largest hydropower company and a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Power, with projects mainly in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and the North East. It recruits civil, electrical and mechanical Trainee Engineers through GATE scores followed by group discussion and interview.

How NHPC Salary is Structured

NHPC Trainee Engineers are appointed in the E2 scale of Rs. 50,000-1,60,000 from day one, including the one-year training. IDA is 55.7 percent of basic from July 2026, adding about Rs. 27,850 a month. HRA or company housing, cafeteria allowance and Performance Related Pay are paid on top. NHPC quotes a CTC of about Rs. 15-16 lakh a year.

What Deductions Will You See?

Provident fund at 12 percent of basic plus IDA is about Rs. 9,300 a month. Professional tax is around Rs. 200. Most project postings include company accommodation, which keeps taxable pay under the Rs. 12 lakh rebate limit, so income tax is usually zero there. PSU executives contribute 12 percent of basic plus DA to provident fund, not NPS on basic alone.

Increments and Career Progression

NHPC gives a 3 percent annual increment on basic, and IDA is revised quarterly. Trainees are absorbed as Engineers in the same E2 scale after one year of training, followed by one year of probation. Selected candidates sign a service bond, and early promotions typically come after about 3 to 5 years.

Is NHPC Salary Good Compared to Private Sector?

At Rs. 15,50,000 CTC, a NHPC Trainee Engineer (E2, Rs. 50,000-1,60,000) takes home Rs. 96,544/mo per month in a metro city. This does not capture the full picture -- free or subsidized accommodation, employer retirement contributions, medical coverage for family, and job security add significant value on top of the cash salary. See the Rs. 15 LPA in-hand salary breakdown for a private sector comparison at the same CTC level.

Tax regime: New regime saves Rs. 1,04,582/year more than old regime at this CTC level.
