About Indian Railways

Indian Railways Group D is the largest entry-level government recruitment in India, conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). Group D posts fall in pay level 1 of the 7th Pay Commission and include track maintainers, helpers in electrical and mechanical departments, porters, and station gatemen. The exam draws over 1 crore applicants in most cycles.

How Indian Railways Salary is Structured

All RRB Group D (Level 1) posts start at basic pay of Rs. 18,000. DA is 60% of basic, HRA is 30%, 20% or 10% of basic depending on city class, and transport allowance with DA is added on top. Some posts get extra allowances such as risk or night duty allowance, which are not included here.

Increments and Promotions

Annual increment is 3% of basic pay. Group D employees can move to Group C posts such as Level 2 and Level 4 technical and clerical posts through departmental exams and promotion. Many eventually reach technician and supervisor grades. MACP upgrades apply after 10, 20 and 30 years without promotion.
