About IPS Officer

The Indian Police Service is one of the three All India Services recruited through the UPSC Civil Services Examination. IPS officers lead district police as Superintendents, then move to range, zone and state headquarters roles, and can be deputed to central agencies like the CBI, IB and central armed police forces. Pay follows the same matrix as the IAS.

How IPS Officer Salary is Structured

IPS officers start at Pay Level 10 with basic pay of Rs. 56,100, the same as IAS. DA, HRA and transport allowance are added, and most postings come with government housing, a vehicle and staff. Officers on central deputation can get extra deputation allowance. The top of the service, DGP and head of police force, reaches Level 17 with basic pay of Rs. 2,25,000.

What Deductions Will You See?

IPS officers who joined after 2004 contribute 10% of basic plus DA to NPS. Income tax applies at entry level in X and Y class cities under the new regime; in Z class postings taxable income stays just under the Rs. 12 lakh rebate limit. Officers living in government accommodation pay a licence fee instead of drawing HRA.
