About Railway Loco Pilot
Loco pilots drive Indian Railways trains. Almost everyone enters as an Assistant Loco Pilot through the RRB ALP exam, which needs ITI, diploma or engineering qualifications. ALPs work alongside a loco pilot, then move up through shunting, goods, passenger and finally Mail/Express trains. It is one of the most applied-for railway jobs because running allowance makes the take-home noticeably higher than other Level 2 posts.
How Railway Loco Pilot Salary is Structured
An ALP starts at Pay Level 2 with basic pay of Rs. 19,900. DA, HRA and transport allowance are added on top as for any central government employee. Running staff also get kilometreage allowance (KMA) for every 100 km operated, and part of it counts as pay for pension and leave purposes. Because KMA depends on how many kilometres you actually run in a month, it is not included in the in-hand figures on this page.
What Deductions Will You See?
The main deduction is NPS at 10% of basic plus DA. At the ALP entry level there is no income tax under the new regime. Some states also deduct professional tax. Railway quarters, where allotted, replace HRA with a small licence fee.

Is Railway Loco Pilot Salary Good in 2026?
At Rs. 5,33,000 CTC, a Railway Loco Pilot Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) - Pay Level 2 takes home Rs. 36,586/mo per month in cash. Government salaries look lower than private sector on paper but the non-cash value is significant: subsidized home loans, medical coverage for the entire family, NPS employer contribution, job security with no layoff risk, and accommodation at many postings. For a private sector comparison at a similar CTC level, see the Rs. 5 LPA in-hand salary breakdown.
