About HPCL

HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited) is a Maharatna oil refining and marketing PSU with refineries in Mumbai and Visakhapatnam and a national fuel retail network. It hires engineers into officer grades through its own recruitment drives and GATE-linked selection, and posts them across refineries, terminals, LPG plants and marketing offices.

How HPCL Salary is Structured

HPCL Engineers join at Rs. 50,000 basic in the Rs. 50,000-1,60,000 scale. IDA is 55.7 percent of basic from July 2026, adding about Rs. 27,850 a month. HRA depends on city class, and cafeteria allowance adds roughly 35 percent of basic. Performance Related Pay is paid yearly on top. HPCL's advertised CTC includes PRP at its maximum and is quoted for metro postings.

What Deductions Will You See?

The main monthly deduction is provident fund at 12 percent of basic plus IDA, about Rs. 9,300. Professional tax is around Rs. 200 depending on state. At a metro posting, income tax under the new regime is about Rs. 4,300 a month, since gross pay sits just above the Rs. 12 lakh rebate limit. HPCL also holds back Rs. 8,000 a month as a retention amount during the 12-month probation. PSU executives contribute 12 percent of basic plus DA to provident fund, not NPS on basic alone.

Is HPCL Salary Good Compared to Private Sector?

At Rs. 17,00,000 CTC, a HPCL Officer / Engineer (E2, Rs. 50,000-1,60,000) takes home Rs. 96,544/mo per month in a metro city. This does not capture the full picture -- free or subsidized accommodation, employer retirement contributions, medical coverage for family, and job security add significant value on top of the cash salary. See the Rs. 15 LPA in-hand salary breakdown for a private sector comparison at the same CTC level.

Tax regime: New regime saves Rs. 1,04,582/year more than old regime at this CTC level.

Frequently Asked Questions

An HPCL Engineer on Rs. 50,000 basic takes home about Rs. 96,500 a month at a metro posting in 2026, after PF, professional tax and income tax. Gross monthly pay is about Rs. 1,10,000 including 55.7 percent IDA, HRA and cafeteria allowance. PRP is paid separately once a year.
HPCL engineers are recruited in the Rs. 50,000-1,60,000 pay scale under the 2017 IDA pattern. Junior Executives join in the Rs. 30,000-1,20,000 scale. Higher grades go up to Rs. 1,20,000-2,80,000 for senior managers.
Yes. HPCL deducts Rs. 8,000 a month as a retention amount from total emoluments during the first 12 months of probation, for officers recruited in the Rs. 50,000-1,60,000 scale and above. In-hand during probation is therefore about Rs. 88,500 at a metro posting.
HPCL quotes a CTC of roughly Rs. 16 to 18 lakh a year for engineers at the minimum of the Rs. 50,000 scale. The advertised figure includes PRP at its maximum and assumes a metro posting, so actual CTC varies by location and rating.
The two pay almost the same at entry. Both start engineers at Rs. 50,000 basic with the same 55.7 percent IDA, so the difference comes down to posting location, perks and PRP rather than the pay scale.
