About SSC MTS

SSC MTS (Multi Tasking Staff) is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for Group C non-gazetted, non-ministerial posts in central government offices and ministries. MTS handles housekeeping, filing, dispatch, and general assistance. Havaldar posts under CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) and CBN (Central Bureau of Narcotics) are also filled through SSC MTS. It is one of the most applied-for SSC exams for candidates with Class 10 qualification.

How SSC MTS Salary is Structured

MTS and Havaldar both start at Pay Level 1 with basic pay of Rs. 18,000. DA is 60% of basic, HRA is 30%, 20% or 10% of basic depending on city class, and transport allowance with DA is added on top. Havaldars in field formations may get extra duty allowances, which are not included here.

What Deductions Will You See?

NPS at 10% of basic plus DA is the main deduction. No income tax applies. Professional tax depends on the state of posting and is nil in Delhi.

MTS staff can move to LDC (Pay Level 2) through the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination and later to UDC. Havaldars follow a separate promotion path within CBIC and CBN. MACP upgrades apply after 10, 20 and 30 years without promotion.

Is SSC MTS Salary Good in 2026?

At Rs. 4,85,000 CTC, a SSC MTS Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) - Pay Level 1 takes home Rs. 33,280/mo per month in cash. Government salaries look lower than private sector on paper but the non-cash value is significant: subsidized home loans, medical coverage for the entire family, NPS employer contribution, job security with no layoff risk, and accommodation at many postings. For a private sector comparison at a similar CTC level, see the Rs. 5 LPA in-hand salary breakdown.

Tax regime recommendation: New regime saves Rs. 0/year more than old regime at this salary level.
