About SSC
SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for clerical and data entry posts in central government ministries and departments. It is one of the most popular government exams for Class 12 pass candidates. Current CHSL posts are Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant and Data Entry Operator (including DEO Grade A). Postal and Sorting Assistant posts are no longer filled through CHSL.
How SSC Salary is Structured
LDC and JSA start at Pay Level 2 with basic pay of Rs. 19,900. DEO starts at Pay Level 4 (Rs. 25,500), and DEO Grade A in departments such as C&AG and MoSPI starts at Pay Level 5 (Rs. 29,200). DA is 60% of basic, HRA is 30%, 20% or 10% of basic depending on the city class, and transport allowance plus DA on it is added on top.
What Deductions Will You See?
The main deduction is NPS at 10% of basic plus DA. No income tax applies to any CHSL post under the new regime because taxable income stays under the Rs. 12 lakh rebate limit. Professional tax depends on the state of posting and is nil in Delhi.
SSC Salary vs Other Government Jobs
| Post / Role | CTC | Monthly In-Hand |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CHSL LDC/JSA (Pay Level 2) | Rs. 5.3 LPA | Rs. 37K/mo |

| SBI Clerk | Rs. 4.0 LPA | Rs. 30,000/mo |
| IBPS Clerk | Rs. 3.8 LPA | Rs. 28,000/mo |
Increments and Promotions
Annual increment is 3% of basic pay. LDC and JSA can move to UDC (Pay Level 4) through seniority or departmental exams, and later to Assistant Section Officer level. DEOs have a separate grade structure within their department. MACP upgrades apply after 10, 20 and 30 years without promotion.
Is SSC Salary Good in 2026?
At Rs. 5,33,000 CTC, a SSC Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / JSA - Pay Level 2 takes home Rs. 36,586/mo per month in cash. Government salaries look lower than private sector on paper but the non-cash value is significant: subsidized home loans, medical coverage for the entire family, NPS employer contribution, job security with no layoff risk, and accommodation at many postings. For a private sector comparison at a similar CTC level, see the Rs. 5 LPA in-hand salary breakdown.
